One of my coworkers used to work in a veterinarian’s office. He said that black cats were the most euthanized. People were less likely to adopt a black cat out of a shelter due to the superstition that black cats are bad luck. There are other beliefs around black cats as well. An old Germanic belief was that if a black cat was seen, it meant there would soon be a death. Everyone knows the superstition that if a black cat crosses your path, it means bad luck. Black cats and witches go hand in hand with those believing the black cat helps the witch perform their evil spells. It was thought that a witch could turn herself into a black cat in order to cast spells on people. On the plus side, there are many good beliefs about black cats. The ancient Egyptians loved and worshipped them as gods.
There are other good black cat superstitions as well. In old England, a black cat on a ship was seen as being lucky. But if the cat walked off the ship, it meant the ship would sink. A black cat given as a wedding gift would bring good fortune to the marriage. Other cultures believed if the black cat walked towards you, it would bring good luck. If it walked away from you, it took your good luck away from you. In old Japan, single women owned black cats believing it would bring them many boyfriends. It was also believed they would bring good fortune and prosperity to businesses. I myself have owned several black cats and they all brought me joy, happiness, love and affection.
If you are a cat lover and thinking of adopting a cat, do consider giving a black cat a home. It will surely bring you good luck.
